The Chartreuse range became a regional nature park in 1995 in recognition
of its high quality of natural and cultural heritage. From a tourist point
of view, new equipment and tools were provided to welcome and inform visitors:
Park Relay points, festivals, maps, guides and a 'route de savoir-faire' (traditional
skills route - craftsmen, farmers and artists).
Local history is strongly influenced by the presence of the Carthusian Order
and the long dispute between the Dauphiné region and the Duchy of Savoie
until it was annexed to France in 1860.
In the Chartreuse, hiking is the main activity. The Park has marked a number
of circuits dotted with orientation maps and information. Climb to Chamechaude
and the Charmant Som, hike between villages, visit the spectacular Cirque
de St. Meme with its 400 metre high cliffs and stunning waterfalls or follow
routes through Savoie's vineyards.
In the winter, you can find snowshoe and cross-country ski routes plus downhill
skiing at 7 resorts.

UK site which describes many walks and the geography of the 'Massif de la
Chartreuse' in great detail. A must to see for all intending visitors !
